Thanks for your support

As many of you know we had a fire here in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 28.  Fortunately, no one was hurt and the local fire departments arrived quickly and were able to contain the fire.  There was damage to two of our greenhouses, including our new one.  The good news is all will be repaired as soon as possible.  The clean up was completed on Saturday and we have been able to open up the greenhouse.  We just want to thank everyone who conveyed kind messages to us.  It was very encouraging to have such community support.

Special thanks to the fire departments in Wileville, Newcombville and Chelsea who responded with prompt and efficient service.  These volunteer men and women provided a valuable service to our community, which we often take for granted.

BLUEBERRY UPDATE

The wild blueberries from Randy Naugler should be available this weekend, and with their arrival we will be in full production of our blueberry cakes here at the Market.

     Highbush blueberries

The Lunenburg County Winery (Hackmatack Farm) delivered the first Lunenburg County highbush blueberries to the Market on Tuesday.  We should have them until late September to early October.  What could be better as a summertime snack, or on your morning cereal?

PRODUCE PICKS

I am thankful for the Market produce as their shelves spill over with all the fixin’s for Hodge Podge.  The veggies are bountiful right now, and this week, we have broad beans available.  Some folks like to add them to their Hodge Podge pot.  The supply of beans and peas is at its peak so enjoy it right now!!!!!

APPLES

Customers have been looking for apples.  We are out of Nova Scotia grown apples and expect to have the first of the season within 3 weeks.  People seem surprised that we don’t have any available, but remember, we try hard to feature local produce from Nova Scotia and so we have to wait for this year’s crop to ripen.  Our farmer suppliers are sold out of last years stored apples.

EAT WHAT'S IN SEASON

Mid summer is the time to feast on raspberries—we are expecting our next shipment on Thursday, and of course, another mid summer treat, cherries.  Shoppers will find Nova Scotia cherries in the Market now—fill up your shopping baskets.  They’re perfect for snacking on as you sit on your dock at the waters edge or on your deck at home---those who want a little adventure can have a lot of fun with a seed spitting contest.

PLANTERS

We have some beautiful planters available.  Some are priced as low as $9.95 and are very showy looking.  If you’ve got a space that looks empty, or you’re looking for a blooming summer gift for someone hosting a party, we can help!

HYDRANGEA

This is one of Elspeth’s favourite shrubs and now the blooms on many varieties are really showing so check them out this week.  You’ll appreciate the sale price starting Friday, August 5th----25% off!!!!  Hydrangeas are very hardy for this area and offer beautiful color in the mid summer and some varieties look really good late into the fall.  The varieties that do best planted in full sun (5 or more hours of sun) are the ones that we have now.  “Annabelle” hydrangea does best in shade but we are sold out of that variety at the moment.

  Happy Summer Everyone--Mary
