PETER'S CORN IS READY

The wait is over---time for Corn Boils----Peter’s Harvest is here!   To insure the very best flavour here are our cooking tips:

Remember- do not overcook your corn.  Bring water to a boil, add the corn, bring it back to a boil and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, depending on the size of the cobs.  Mmmmmm Delicious!!

ABUNDANTLY FRESH-PLEASINGLY LOCAL

The fall harvest is hitting our Market shelves in a big way!  Our display counters are groaning under the bountiful supply of natures finest ingredients.

Apples

The cool nights and warm days in Nova Scotia create good growing conditions for the apple crop, and one of our most popular apples, Gravensteins are here in abundance!  Red, ripe and delicious, back to school and Gravensteins go hand in hand!  They’re our apples of choice of our apple crisp.  The 10 lb bags are $5.99

Crabapples are here now---for those who enjoy making jelly or preserves.  The color is terrific, pick yours up this week, they can sometimes be hard to find.

Clapp Pears are ready for good eating this week. Their mellow flavour and juicy goodness are hard to beat—there’s something relaxing about eating ripe pears.

Tomatoes---field ripened to their delicious red goodness, tomatoes are in Abundance right now!

Peter’s Cukes---cukes are hanging on, but you won’t want to delay your pickle making.  If you want extra large cukes, please call and leave an order and we can get them from our field within a day or so.

ELSPETHS RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Simply Fresh Tomato Soup

4-5 average sizes tomatoes, chopped

1 medium sizes onion, finely chopped

1 large clove garlic, finely chopped or crushed

½ tsp. olive oil

½ tsp. butter

1 cup water or chicken stock or vegetable stock

¼ cup fresh basil, finely chopped

½ tsp. thy6me, finely chopped

2/3 cup of milk, (whole milk or cream makes this richer, but if you are counting calories substitute with skim or 2%)

Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

  • Melt butter and oil in pot
  • Add chopped onion and garlic and cook until transparent
  • Add tomatoes and water and cook for 15 minutes
  • Pour into blender or use a hand blender to puree the tomato mixture
  • Add remaining ingredients and heat gently, avoid boiling

This is delicious but really tastes better the second day.  Ideally, make it the day before you want to serve.  You can substitute dried herbs and if using commercial chicken stock reduce the amount of salt added.

Serving Suggestion---sprinkle the soup with homemade croutons and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese!

FALL DECORATING

Over the next 7-10 days will be busy transforming the Market for the Fall season with many colorful displays.  Look for grasses, newly made planters showcasing ornamental peppers, and Rudbeckia.  People have been dropping into the greenhouse to get inspired by some of Angela’s talents.  Fall decorating made easy for you—check it out in our greenhouse over the next few days.

FAREWELL AND GOOD LUCK

September is always a time at the Market to say farewell to our students, and this year with say farewell to several staff.  Cortlain Whynott is off to school at NSCC in Truro to study International Business.  Tanya Cross has moved on to a job at Sweet Indulgence Café in Lunenburg.  Thanks to them both and Best Wishes in their futures!

AUTUMN INSPIRATION

The air is full of autumn smells----ripening fruit, wood smoke, new crayons, vinegar and spice warming kitchens as the furious pace of pickling continues.  As we say farewell to the lazy hazy days of summer it’s time to get back to schedules, appointments and routines.  Many of us are tempted to linger for an extra few moments each day enjoying our garden paths drinking in the scenery.  Stress is relieved and the pressures of the day seem to just melt away!!

Happy Fall everyone…..Mary
