Opening Day - Just Around the Corner

March 28 is opening day at the Market.  This is one of our favorite days of the season; we have so much fun seeing all our friends and ushering in another year!  We will be happy to show off some of our additions, which includes an upscale coffee machine.  We are learning how to make Lattes, Cappuccinos and Americanos.  The coffee culture of the area has taken some giant steps and we are happy to offer another choice when it comes to “let’s go out for coffee”!

We are working on new food offerings in the kitchen that we expect to have ready within a few weeks of opening.

Watch for our first Facebook Live segment with Jennifer Naugler. This year our theme is “Seed to Plate”.  We will look at what produce is in season and give some growing and gardening tips for that vegetable. We will also provide a recipe featuring the fruit or vegetable.   We love new recipes; sometimes just for reading, sometimes for inspiration and sometimes we actually try them!

You can follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Our website www.wilesfarmmarket.com is full of recipes and gardening information; stay in touch to keep up on our news and events.

Throughout April we will be open from 8:30 am to 6 pm.

Looking forward to seeing you next week.

Easy Pruning

Now is the time you should be pruning fruit trees and other small shrubs and trees in your yard.  Pruning in the early years of a fruit tree's growth helps to establish the frame for the tree to produce fruit.   If there are broken branches they should be removed along with branches that cross each other and block the light from penetrating to the centre of the tree.    Without snow and ice this year, we don’t have any good excuse for not getting at this important garden activity.

We recommend spraying with dormant oil and lime sulphur in the spring, This destroys overwintering insect eggs and prepares the trees to resistant fungus that can cause leaf curl and other problems.  When we get a few warm days, and the leaf buds are swelling and just starting to crack open is the ideal time to apply the dormant oil.  Temperatures must be in the 14-16 degree range and there must be a window of 48 hours without rain.  Sometimes this combination of conditions is impossible to have, however keep your eyes on the trees and the thermometer.

Plant your Peas like Hector

For more than 20 years Hector Bolivar grew peas for the Market.  Hector has passed on but at this time of year I always think about him arriving here at the Market to tell us when the peas were planted.  One year they went into the ground on March 17, so if you have a raised bed or a piece of well drained soil get the seeds in the ground.  Yes, you can plant another bunch later but get some in the ground early.    We have the seeds!

Get inpired - Seeds are here

Our seed racks are full.  We carry veggie and flower seeds from Suttons (UK company), Halifax Seed Company.  There are local choices as well - Yonder Hill Farm in Laconia and Cochrane Family Farm in Upper Stewiacke.  We have some great reference material to help you make the best choices.

Get on the Sweet Potato list

If you want to plant sweet potatoes, get on the list; we will hold cuttings for you until early June. They are super frost sensitive so we don’t bring in the cuttings until May and we don’t recommend planting out until early June.
$2.75/pot; 5 for $12.50
