Market Musing

What can I say after the weather of the last few days.  Monday morning started with a heavy salting of the Market parking lot and Peter helping staff over the icy yard to avoid anyone falling on the ice!  Temperatures really do need to get to the double digits to provide even a hint of early spring Market weather.

Thank you to all who helped get us started by filling your bellies with the delicious food from the bakery and the Market Kitchen.  This past week, we have been getting our feet going and training some new employees so we appreciate your patience.

It is hard to get our heads around gardening when there is snow and single digit temperatures. If you want to start some tomato plants for setting out in late May or early June, now is the time to get those seedlings started with seed from some of our local sources.  We have some great choices of tomato seeds; why not try something new, we are happy to help you pick something perfect for your tastes.

Hoping for warmer weather.

New Faces

Alecia

We are happy to welcome some new faces to our Market staff.  Alecia Spencer is in the greenhouse working with Sam Richards and Ann Ryan.  Alecia moved to Barss Corner with her partner, a good Lunenburg County boy come home!  Alecia worked in the landscape business for the last 10 years in British Columbia and will be a great help to anyone planning use of perennials in the garden.  She is familiarizing herself with the annuals and perennials that do well in our climate which is different from the West coast gardening world. Welcome Alecia!

Tracey

Tracey Nilsson is new to our bakery.  Tracey lives with her family in Waterloo and comes to us with baking experience.  She doesn’t mind the early morning shifts and is learning our recipes and her way around the bakery kitchen. She is busy with her five children and manages to squeeze in bakery shifts with us.  Petra Srdic and Rebecca Campbell are two new faces at the front cash register.  Petra and her family moved to Wileville from Hamilton, Ontario last fall.  She brings experience in the hospitality industry to us and she loves gardening so we think she is a great fit.

Rebecca, graduated from high school in 2017 and then packed her bags and travelled throughout Europe for the past seven months.  Clearly a young woman with an adventuresome spirit!  She’s a rugby player and heading off to Bishops’ University in September.  Welcome all.

Fresh Tulip Care

Our fresh tulips come from Vanco Farms Limited. A family owned and operated farm In Prince Edward Island.

To extend the life of your fresh tulips use 1/2 of the package of  preservative in the container of water. Cut each stem tip on a diagonal with a sharp knife or cutters.  Check water level each day.  After 5 days change the water adding the remainder of preservative and recut the ends.

Time to Plant Tomato Seeds

Now is the time to start your tomato seeds.

We have a good selection of local organic, heritage seed varieties proven to flourish in our area.

The Wentzell Beefsteak is an early Pink Brandywine variety.  This tomato was grown for generations locally on what is now Windhorse Farm.
