Market Musing

This week I cut a bouquet of flowers from my garden which triggered a flood of memories of family and friends.  Nestled just under the forsythia are several patches of columbine, dark blue, tall and stately!  These were planted by Peter’s Mom many years ago, probably 60 years ago.   Clarice was an avid gardener and reminants of her gardening show up every spring in places around our home, which was the home she and Bernie built when they were first married.

Then I clipped my elegant and voluptuous ‘Sarah Bernhardt’ peony and I thought of the peonies in my mother’s garden in Pictou County.  They were always in bloom for my birthday in early July, bright pink and gorgeous!  They are still there, not quite as spectacular as they lie in the shadow of a gigantic maple near her farmhouse.

My final snip was from the Solomon Seal plant, a gift from a former employee Emily Butts.   Emily worked for Peter and I at the farm and also in the greenhouse.  She was generous in so many ways.

This is just another example of the magic of gardening.  Flowers that trigger such memories of people, events and places.

I hope you are generous with your plants; they reinforce memories and relationships that may be gone but not forgotten.

Happy gardening

Apple Cider Vinegar

We are now carrying Boates Apple Cider Vinegar. Boates is the only apple cider vinegar producer in Atlantic Canada.  The mild flavor makes apple cider vinegar a versatile substitute for any vinegar in recipes.  It is excellent for dressings and marinades.

Haskap Bushes

The Haskap berry originally grown in Asia produces small oval berries that resemble an elongated blueberry. These hardy plants thrive in cooler climates and are a great addition to a soft fruit garden.  Bushes should produce a harvest of berries in 3-4 years.   We carry two varieties Polar Jewel and Sugar Mountain 'Eisber' More information on uses and benefits of the haskap berry here.
