Market Musing

As most of you know our Canada Day tradition is to host a free pancake breakfast for anyone who wants to join us.  This was our 26th year of inviting customers, family and friends to start their celebrations with us.

The breakfast had a very modest beginning with electric fry pans and batches of 4 pancakes per pan!  Clearly the event evolved over the years and now we have a gas griddle that accommodates 12 – 18 pancakes at one time.  We involve the Wileville Fire Department who help with parking and cooking and serving pancakes.  Thanks so much, as this allows us to carry out our regular activities of baking, cooking, and serving customers!  The proceeds from the day go to support their work, this year they walked away with $480.00 in donations.  Servant's Heart a mission group working to better the lives of those in need in the Dominican Republic provided the coffee.

Over the years we have welcomed many folks and the event has become a tradition for many families.  This is one of the great benefits of living in a small community where you get to know your customers.  We have grown up with many families.

This year again reaffirmed all of this.

Bill MacLean came long with his boys, his Mom and Dad, John and Donna MacLean and sister Anne.  Bill worked for us on the farm the year we built the Market (1985) and for several more years.  Bill helped with rock picking, fence building, haying and everything that goes with farm life.  John and Donna have been customers since we opened our doors in 1985.  John always volunteers to help and this year in true John style made the rounds visiting and socializing! Bill’s boys are just a tad younger than he was when he started working for us!  So fun to see them all gathered here sharing pancakes with us.

Then there was the crowd of high school kids cycling from Massachusetts; they hit the jackpot after cycling for two hours to find a free carb loaded food stop.  We welcomed them to the food and fun!

We are never quite sure who will show up, or how many we will feed – doesn’t matter to us, they are always the right people!  Thanks for making our day folks.

Bug watch

It is a good  practice to regularly walk through your gardens, both flowering and veggie to check for signs of a bug infestation.  Curled up leaves, discoloured leaves, and leaves with holes are a good indication that you may have a bug problem.    This time of year earwigs and slugs are prevalent.  We have Safer brand products and diatomaceous earth available to combat these pesky garden problems.

Fertilizing

By this time of year all your shrubs and trees should be fertilized.  This includes your blueberry bushes, strawberry plants, currant and gooseberries and any other small fruits you have in your garden.  This week is really the last time to apply any fertilizer. Be sure to select the appropriate fertilizer for the different plants in your garden.  We have a Tree and Shrub fertilizer, one for Berry Bushes, another for perennials and annuals.  Just ask us, we are happy to help you get the right one!
