Market Musing

This past weekend I spent a lot of time behind the counter scooping ice cream and running the cash.  That is another musing for another time!  We were busy with a lot of people I did not recognize, people of all ages, families, singles and couples!

For many I could only speculate on what they were up to for the weekend and how they came to find us in their travels.  However, there was an opportunity for me to squeeze in a few inquiries – just part of what I do, my informal market research.  What interesting findings….

  • Two young guys, probably in their late 20s were loading up on bread and pies – 6 packages of bread in various sizes and pies.  They stayed for lunch and enjoyed an ice cream as they left.  Their story… they grew up coming to a family cottage, had lots of friends in the area and were visiting for the weekend from Halifax.  They remembered the brown bread from their young days!   This is not the first time I have heard this type of story, the connection with the memories of youth and fun happy times lingers.  I was happy to tell them that our recipe for brown bread had not changed.
  • Second story …. A couple were admiring the fudge and told me they drove from Lower Sackville for the fudge!  How did they find us? They stopped in last year when they were looking for a cottage.  They love the area and they love our fudge – 1.5 pounds of fudge and off they went with several bags of other goodies.
  • Near the end of the day a young family came in and ordered five ice creams, when I asked if they enjoyed their weekend they all exclaimed it was awesome!  The Dad of the tribe said “We time our trip home so we can stop in for ice cream to end the weekend”!

I work during the summer so in many ways “I live the summer vicariously through our customers”.It was so much fun to hear the stories about summer fun!

I hope you too are having lots of ‘summer fun’!
