Market Musing

These next two weeks are prime vacation weeks in Nova Scotia.  Many people take their summer holidays during this time and together with the tourists visiting our area, the population grows significantly with lots of new people visiting the Market.

On Saturday in a short two hour period I spoke with folks from Indiana, Mississipi and New Jersey.  All were holidaying  in Nova Scotia for the first time.  They were having a great experience, loving the beauty of the landscape, the ocean and the people.

We were fortunate enough to catch people on their way to Keji National Park and others who were heading to the Digby Ferry.

We really enjoy talking to visitors and make a genuine effort to help them with travel directions and suggestions on what to see and do.  These folks are our guests and we should all make them feel as welcome as possible.  There are lots of places they can go and lots of ways they can spend their money so we need to remember it is a privilege to live in a place that others see as a great vacation area.  These are important dollars being spent in our area, dollars that create jobs in the tourism industry and the related service sector supporting the industry.

We don’t count on tourists to make our business successful however we appreciate them stopping and we take the time to contribute to a “great vacation experience”!  Everyone has a role to play – simple things like offering help with directions, suggesting your favorite restaurants, beaches, hikes and shops.  I have travelled enough to know that the best experiences come from the ideas shared by the locals who know the special places which are never shown in the tourism information.

People who move here from other parts of Canada and the world, often discover Lunenburg County by holidaying here or visiting family and friends.  The work I am involved in with NOW Lunenburg County absolutely confirms this fact.

Hosting tourists is a wonderful way to lay the groundwork for potential new residents.  We do need more people living in Lunenburg County.  Our demographics suggest we have a looming challenge to fill all the jobs that will result from the growing segment of our workforce who are approaching retirement age.  Many businesses are already experiencing the early effects of this change and it will continue to grow.

Remember tourists are important now for the support they give to local businesses; however they are important for our future as they could be our new neighbours.

Petunia Trimming

These hot humid days and heavy showers can wreak havoc with petunias.  To perk them back up again they need deadheading, trimming and fertilizer.  Elspeth demonstrates a before and after trimming above.
