Market Musing

The aromas that waft from the Market everyday often lead people to comment ..."Oh it smells so good here!"  Those lovely fragrances greet people when they step out of their cars in the parking lot.  It has become a very effective sales tool!

Memories are so often triggered by these aromas.

Just last week a good looking young man and his equally good looking girlfriend presented themselves to me and asked..."do you remember me?"  I recognized the face however could not put a name to the face.  Mr. Brown grew up just across the street from the Market and moved away while he was in high school.  Turns out he was home visiting his parents who retired to Springfield.  He was showing his American girlfriend where he grew up.  He is now completing a PhD in chemistry at a US university; she is in the US airforce.

We chatted and caught up on his life and then he said...." My favorite memory of the Market was waiting for the school bus across the street and smelling the bread baking".  The power of our noses to create memories!

It was so nice of him to stop by and catch up.

Then just a few days later Katie showed up!  I remember her as a tiny girl arriving with her parents and brother on Friday night to buy raisin bread.  Katie often wore fancy little princess dresses - tulle, lace and always purple!  She and her brother would sit outside the Market on one of our displays, open the bag of bread and dig in - tearing off big chunks of bread and devouring it like they had not eaten in a week.

Katie was visiting with her Dad, taking a break from her residency in obstetrics from a hospital in Vancouver.  She is now Dr. Katie - a beautiful young woman, home for a trip to the "raisin bread store", as she still refers to the Market.

Again, time to catch up with these longstanding customers and their families.

The power of bread to connect people through its aroma and taste!

Seed Garlic

Planting Garlic Tips

Now is the time to get your garlic crop in the ground.  Our seed garlic is now available.

Break the bulbs into cloves; being careful not to damage the ‘foot’. Plant the largest cloves with 8” spacing with the pointed end at least 2” below the surface.  Mulching is recommended to conserve moisture, and moderate the soil temperature. Choose a garden location that is in full sun and has well drained soil

Watering After Drought

Although normally fall is a great time to separate perennials and renovate gardens, with this season’s drought issues we are not recommending it.  Well established plants with deep root systems are more able to survive in these dry conditions but new plantings may have suffered.  Try to do some deep watering with a hose twice a week to strengthen root systems for the winter.  Check for disease and insects on any drought stressed plants. Have you thought about a rain barrel to capture the rain from your eavestrough?
