Market Musing

As I drove around the lake Monday evening after work I noticed how beautiful the sunset would be in just a few minutes.  The lake was perfectly calm; there was a soft glow in the fall light and the air was clear and fresh. I have taken little time to “walk the farm” this summer and Monday just seemed to be a perfect time  for an evening stroll before supper.

I found Peter moving equipment around and he joined me as we wandered up the hill at the back of our farm to take in the spectacular view.  We share our farm with others – to our right was Chris Manzer’s cattle grazing and further up the hill -  Krista and John Harding’s vineyard stood in the fall light.  It has been a disappointing year for them and other grape growers throughout Nova Scotia.  The June 3 frost eliminated their crop for 2018.  Our hearts went out to them as they faced the disappointment of losing their grapes and this year’s income.  As we know all too well, farming is not for the faint of heart.  We always say…”There’s next year!”

The drumlin behind our barn provides a panoramic view of the surrounding communities, we can see for miles. The view from the hill was truly amazing, the bronze, brown, sutble red and yellow colors of the fall popped out against the landscape in every direction we looked.

The walk offered me a few minutes to be truly thankful for all that I have in my life.  I hope you too had a little time over the weekend to be thankful.

Apples, Apples, Apples

The arrival of Fall signals the beginning of local apple season.

We are carrying 11  varieties:

From Cortland and Cox Orange to Silken, Sunrise and Sweet Tango. Our samples are FREE, so why not try finding your new favorite one!  We always suggest eating in season and that goes for apples as well. Gravensteins may still be good for pies and sauce however not the best for fresh eating at this stage of the fall - why not try a Ginger Gold, MacIntosh or Cortland

Join Elspeth and Jennifer on Facebook live this week on Thursday evening October 11 at 7pm as they discuss apple varieties and uses.

Planting bulbs for Spring Colour

We have a great selection of spring bulbs, tulip, daffodil, crocus and the fragrant hyacinth whether you are creating a new bed or adding to an existing garden now is the time to get them in the ground. Bulbs make a showy addition to perennial plantings.

Sunny daffodils look great planted with hosta and rhodos.  Good companion plants for tulips include Bleeding Heart, Columbine and daylilies.

Check out the following chart for planting depth of spring flowering bulbs.  we recommend adding bone meal to the soil.

We still have garlic bulbs available.for planting.
