Market Musing

The last edition….(for 2018)

This will be my last musing for the season of 2018.  Plans are well underway for 2019 as we close the doors on our 33rd season.  Thanks to all of you for your support and encouragement throughout the year.  I am always struck by the number of people who are “rooting for us” in their own quiet way.

Peter and I, extend our deepest appreciation and thanks for the loyalty of so many customers.  We have built our business as a seasonal one, that closes and reopens five months later.  Each year we reconnect with people and find some new customers to support what we offer.  We appreciate the friendships and connections we make each season with so many of our customers.

The challenges of running a small business do not diminish with time however we continue to enjoy the people who come through our door and the people we are fortunate to have working with us.  A big thank you goes to them as they never shy away from a new challenge and always step up when the going gets a little tough.  Thanks to all our staff.

In particular I want to acknowledge Janice Ross who is retiring this year after five years of being the “Administrative Assistant to Everyone” at the Market.  Janice joined us after I called and said….”I need someone to answer the phone and a whole lot more, but I’m not sure what that is!”  Without a pause Janice said “Yes”.   Janice did answer the phone and a whole lot more, her fingerprints can be found on every new project we ventured into in the last five years. Her ability to teach, coach, research, problem-solve, serve customers, and help all of us was remarkable.  I will miss her as a sounding board and right hand.  Thanks Janice!

Looking forward to a break but also to March 29, our opening day in 2019.

With gratitude and thanks

Elspeth & Peter

Still time to plant bulbs

The frost, wind and rain of the last few weeks have likely destroyed your annuals.  It is definitely time to clean up and in doing that activity, think about planting bulbs.  It's not too late to put tulips, daffodils, crocus in the ground!  Remember bonemeal is important to develop a good root system, just put a handful in the hole and add the bulb.  If you have bulbs in the ground from previous years feed them now with some bonemeal, it is slow release and will be available to the bulb next spring when growth begins.

Your spring self will thank you!

Winter Garden Interest

Don't be too quick to cut off all your perennials and grasses.  Consider leaving seed heads from flowering perennials and shrubs like hydrangea and sedum on for the winter months.  They give gardens texture and interest when frost, snow and ice are captured on the blooms.  Grasses can be gorgeous when frosted or carrying a layer of ice.   Rosehips, crabapples, holly and barberries  add a nice shot of color and provide feed for the birds.
