Market Musing

Everyone has a cherished memory of summer -- a family cottage, a child's summer camp, ice cream at the local concession, long days with nothing much to do but watch sailboats on the bay, read a book on the beach. We might mourn the passing of the people and places that inhabit these memories, yet all around us summer is happening. There is nothing we like better than having young families drop into the market during their summer vacation. The kids puzzle over what flavour of ice cream to get (it's a life-altering decision when you are seven) while parents buzz about stocking up on supplies for the picnic, the camp, the beach house. Yes, these families are building memories, but more importantly, they are enjoying their time together, right here, right now. We're so happy to be a part of it.

Hodge Podge Heaven

While some may think 'Lobster' when they dream of summer in Nova Scotia, at Wiles Farm Market we think 'Hodge Podge' --- that homey recipe that is pretty much a summer garden in a pot. Add cream and butter, salt and pepper, a loaf of fresh bread to mop up the sauce. What could be better? Here's our Wile's Farm Market family recipe if you don't have one of your own. And while its cooking up, check out this CBC video of Gordon Pinsent reciting a hodge podge recipe. It's a hoot!

It's a Jungle Out There

After a slow spring start, here in Lunenburg County the tomato plants are going wild and if you take a peek under all those leaves, you'll see  tomatoes growing. Here is a short Fine Gardening video on how to tame your tomato plants so they put their energy into producing tomatoes rather than foliage. Don't forget to water and fertilize frequently as the plants begin to set fruit. And then you wait... (or if you can't wait, here is a great recipe for fried green tomatoes). Usually, we reserve this recipe for the last green tomatoes of the season, but early green tomatoes work just as well once they have reached their mature size. So delicious!

Boost your Bloomers

After the first blush of seasonal colour, your garden and container plantings are now settling into the long hot (and often dry) days of summer. This is a time when your garden, if not tended properly, can begin to look a bit tired around the edges. Taking care of it includes of course, weeding, light trimming, and dead heading, as well as feeding. Fertilizing your plants (what, when, where, how) can be a little confusing (check out this Fine Gardening article), but this time of year it mostly comes down to promoting bloom and getting fertilizer to the roots as quickly as possible. To this end, we sell and recommend Miracle Grow Bloom Booster to help your plants look their best as we move into the dog days of summer.

Aphid Alert

It's that time of year when you may start seeing aphids in your garden if you have not already. Aphids suck the sap out of your plants and can cause serious damage, including killing the plant itself. Luckily, aphids are a relatively easy insect to deal with. Read this Farmer's Almanac article on how to identify and rid yourself of this common garden pest then come to the market to pick up your Safer insecticidal soap and Safer End All
