Market Musing -- Dog Days?

Sorry to disabuse you of the notion, but no, late July and August are not called the 'Dog Days' after dear old Fido who on these muggy hot afternoons does nothing more strenuous than scout out a shady spot for a nap. Rather, in ancient times, this season of the year was referred to as 'the dog days' to denote the rising of the star Sirius (the dog star, part of the constellation Canis Major) just before the sun comes up every morning. The myth surrounding this constellation and its brightest star is a fantastic tale of Greek gods and goddesses, a relentless racing dog and a fleeing rabbit. The science surrounding Sirius (the star) is equally fascinating. Both make for great summer reading -- under a cool shade tree of course. With a glass of lemonade. Next to your dog. Read aloud to him. We think you'll both enjoy it. Or perhaps rise early (before the sun) and look for Sirius in the pre-dawn sky. Come to the market and let us know if he's still chasing that rabbit. Dogs are welcome here. We even have pup sized ice-cream. Served with a Grinners Nova Scotia dog treat on top!

Water Ways!

You would think watering your garden and containers would be a simple matter -- turn on the hose or the sprinkler, give your plants a drink, then sit back in your lawn chair and relax. Not so fast dear friends. Watering is actually a little complicated -- nothing you can't handle, but it definitely requires some knowledge and some planning. This Fine Gardening article provides an in-depth guide to watering. It's worth a read. Your garden is an investment and watering is one of the most critical tasks you perform to protect that investment.

p.s. For those of you on the South Shore that have dug wells and are trying to conserve water, here is some additional information on gardening in drought conditions.

Can She Bake A Cherry Pie?

After all the excitement of strawberry season, it may seem that everything that follows is -- well -- perhaps a bit of a let down. That is if you are a fruit bowl half empty kind of person. Now if you are a fruit bowl half full sort, you'll be doubly excited about what comes next -- cherries and of course blueberries. Cherry pie?  And don't even get us started on blueberries and blueberry grunt. We think these all give strawberries a run for their money. And then of course with the late crop strawberries (mid to late August) now the 'fashion', our favourite berry never really goes away.

We all Scream for Ice Cream

Well the vote is in (based on an informal count). Moon Mist is #1 amongst Facebook followers who responded to our Farmer's Ice Cream favourite flavour poll. Yes, Moon Mist -- that pink and blue and yellow swirl that looks like -- well, we're not sure what it looks like.

No matter what your favourite flavour, come in for a scoop, or two or three.

Company is Coming!

Why do we rarely get company in February here in Lunenburg County? Februrary is a beautiful time of year  on the South Shore. Really. What's so great about July and August anyway? Well that's a rhetorical question if we ever asked one. So the company comes and after a day at the beach or the lake they are hungry and you are hot and tired. What to do? Come to the market and pick up all you need to prepare a simple feast -- coleslaw, cucumber, pasta, and potato salad, lasagne, pulled pork, mac and cheese. Our prepared side dishes and main courses are delicious and easy -- freeing you up to enjoy and impress your visitors. Call ahead to reserve your feast.
