Pumpkins are waiting to be turned into Jack-O Lanterns, and the younger generation can hardly contain themselves as they wait to dress up in their superhero costumes and go collecting handfuls of sugary treats!  Gardens are looking for attention, and the harvest is nearing the end for this season. We’ll launch Christmas at the Market next week.

Trick or Treat

For those who have yet to make that all important choice of their pumpkin for  Hallowe’en carving we have a good selection at the Market.  Both traditional orange and even a few of the popular white pumpkins welcome you to our parking lot and they’re ripe for the picking. For added fall color on your doorstep we still have a few garden mums at $5.

Christmas at the Market

Join us from 6 to 9 pm on Friday, November 2nd  as we launch Christmas at the Market. We’ll have    Christmas treats to eat, hourly draws and door prizes.  Browse through our wonderland of trees and lights—lots of Christmas ideas with you in mind. We’ll once again deck the halls, put up the trees with neat, nifty and unique ornaments and turn on the lights and Christmas music.  It’ll be a festive scene to get you in the mood as the Christmas season draws ever nearer.

Apple Update

Take your pick this week from our ever increasing selection of Nova Scotia grown apples.  We’re adding Russet, Cox Orange, Jona Gold and Kings to our varieties.  Though we offer a huge selection during the apple harvest we can’t possibly keep up with the 7500 varieties grown world wide.   Did you know Canadians eat on average 86 apples per year?  Count yourself in—and fill your basket this week.

We’re also offering Flemish Beauty pears—nice and crunchy with an excellent flavour--$2.99 for the 3 litre basket.

In the Garden

If you haven’t planted your bulbs—better do it now.  Our Maritime weather could change overnight to low temperatures.  If you’re in need of bulbs or Bonemeal, stop by the Market and we’ll assist you in your selections.  Here are a few planting tips:

  • Plant in well drained soil to which you add composted sheep or cow manure, or compost
  • Place Bonemeal in the hole and set the bulbs on top of the Bonemeal, pointed end upward
  • Plant bulbs 2x or 3x the height of the bulb—daffodils as deep as 71/2 or 8 inches, crocus 1 and ½ inch deep
  • Best to plant in clumps for showy displays
  • Plant in odd numbers, 5, 7 or 9 bulbs per hole

Some folks have been asking about pruning—we suggest you wait until spring to do any pruning of trees and shrubs.  Also a reminder to gardeners who like to protect their precious plantings over the freezing cold winter months—don’t wrap until the ground is hard and the days are cold.

Folks looking for anything special in shrubs and trees for spring planting should get their request to us now as we place our orders in the fall.  Give us a call at 543-6082.
