Elspeth wins 'The Rosemary"

Congratulations Elspeth!!!!!!  Winner of “The 2008 Rosemary”

The Farm Credit Canada Rosemary Davis Award honours women who are active leaders in Canadian Agriculture—these are women who give of themselves in their communities or beyond.  The award is an all-expense paid trip to the 2008 Simmons School of Management premier leadership conference for women.  Elspeth is a winner this year and is off to Boston this week-end—the conference includes over 2000 women from across the US and Canada.  High profile speakers, including Gloria Estefan, Cherie Blair, lots of journalists and authors specializing in women in business, politics, NGO’s.  Elspeth will broadcast her CKBW report from the Boston Public Gardens on Monday if all goes as planned—tune in!!!!  A special thank you to the Market staff, Peter and the family who have supported her in many “non market” related activities—she couldn’t have won the award without their support and effort.

Notes from Elspeth

My “Ottawa” Forsythia (a dwarf version) by my front door is loaded with fabulous yellow flowers.  The hyacinths and daffodils at the Market are putting on quite a show.  Everyone should be out cleaning up the gardens, raking (if your yard is dry enough) and pruning.  If you need help with pruning plan to attend our Pruning Workshop on May 20th at 6:30 pm.  Remember to register Bridgewater Parks and Rec.

Customized Basklets-Instant Gardens

We have for years done lots of custom baskets, window boxes, hanging baskets and assorted containers.  You bring your containers, select the plants or we can if you don’t know what you want and we grow them in our greenhouse until June 1.  Then you go home with an instant garden.  It’s a very easy effective way to get an early start on your plants.  This is especially good if you are busy and don’t have time or space to keep these things indoors until the weather warms up.

Pansies & Perennials

We have a nice selection of pansies ready to go home—just starting to flower and show instant color. They can make a wonderful basket or pot near your front door.  They are cold hardy and bring a joyful presence to some of those long cold drizzly days that will likely show up in May!!!

Greenhouses are Open

Come and see our Woodland Fairy World at the entrance to #1 Greenhouse.  The greenhouse girls were inspired by our woodland setting in some of the new giftware! There are lots of interesting baskets, wicker planters and other containers.  This is the time to start planning what you want to do in your garden and on your deck this year—why not make it the Woodland Fairy Theme?  We’re packed with ideas!

Herbs

One of the most popular ways to freshen up favourite recipes –herbs.  We have lots available for gardeners. It’s still too cold for basil but it could be grown indoors until mid June.

Shrubs

It’s time for all you keen gardeners to get down in the dirt!  You’ve waited through many long winter months for warm spring days so you could return to your favourite garden spots---now’s the time!  Start with shrubs.  By the week-end   we’ll have a good selection available.  Lots of native perennials, including heaths and heathers, roses and fruit trees.  Got an area of your yard that could use a pick-me-up---come and pick a shrub from our selection!

Mama Mia-Market Pizza Dough

We are always trying to come up with new bakery items.  We have added pizza dough to our offerings. Using our bread dough we freeze portions sizes for a 12” pizza pan.  Both plain and whole wheat are available.  The dough should be thawed for 4-5 hours and by that time it will start to rise and can be used as the base for a yummy homemade pizza.  Just ask for the dough at the front counter or from the bakery girls.

Country Seed Bread-NEW for 2008

Everyone’s Raving over our Country Seed Bread---a recipe we developed for our customers.  Demand is so good we can hardly keep it on our shelves.  Stop by and see Lenore in the Bakery and get the scoop on what she’s included in this new favourite.
