Spring is Bursting out in Boston

The pink and white dogwoods were in their full glory on Beacon Hill in Boston. The flowering crab, kerria bushes, magnolias, PJM Rhododendrons were almost at their peek in the Public Gardens.  The leaves were well opened in Cambridge on the Harvard University Campus.  Everywhere there were pansies in beds, planters and window boxes.  Pink and yellow tulips were the    colors of choice.  Boston was bursting with signs of spring.

I was in Boston to attend a conference with 3000 other women sponsored by the Simmons Business School.  It was a very enlightening and empowering day.  Enough about Boston. Let’s talk about Wileville and Lunenburg County!!!!!! ---Elspeth

Mother's Day

Make it a date to bring Mom to the Market on Sunday, Mother’s Day. We have lots of great gift ideas, the flowers in the greenhouse are very colorful and it’s a great place to hang out after Sunday dinner.  We continue our usual tradition of offering free ice cream to all the Moms who visit us on Sunday.  It’s a really busy day but great fun for us and for all our visitors.

Mowing Lawns

This weekend many folks will start mowing their lawns if that has not already happened in your yard. Remember the grass clippings on your lawn are an important source of organic material for the lawn. The clippings contribute nutrients to the soil as they break down.  Don’t be too quick to haul these off your lawn.  It is probably best to mow your lawn often and not leave too thick a layer of clippings on the lawn at any one time.  Mow more often with the lawn mower blade set higher so the grass remains 21/2 “-3” in height.

Fertilizers

Pick the right fertilizer for the right plants.  Now is the time to put fertilizer around your trees, on your lawn, around perennials, fruit trees and small fruit plants like strawberries, raspberries, and currants.

Happy Gardening Everyone—see you Sunday for ice cream!
